Introduction

Crohn Zone ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use crohnzone.com (the "Site") and our email newsletter. It also explains your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (collectively, the "CCPA"), our compliance with the federal CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, and our voluntary alignment with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (the "GDPR").

1. Notice at Collection

At or before the point you provide us your personal information, we tell you what we collect and why. Specifically:

  • What we collect: your email address when you submit the newsletter signup form (popup or footer); your name, email, subject, and message when you submit the contact form; automatically-collected log data (IP address, browser type, pages visited) when you browse the Site.
  • Why we collect it: to deliver the Crohn Zone Weekly Digest, to reply to your contact inquiries, and to monitor and secure the Site. We do not collect, infer, or process sensitive personal information as defined by the CCPA.
  • How long we keep it: we retain your email subscription record for as long as you remain subscribed, plus a reasonable suppression period after you unsubscribe so we do not accidentally re-add you. Contact form messages are retained for up to 24 months. Log data is retained for up to 12 months.
  • Sale or sharing: we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We have never done so and have no plans to.

2. Information We Collect

a. Information you provide: email address (newsletter signup); name, email, subject, and message (contact form). All newsletter signups require an affirmative consent checkbox before submission.

b. Information collected automatically: our hosting and analytics providers log your IP address, browser type, device type, referring URL, and pages visited. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate visitor behavior. Google Analytics processes data on our behalf - see their privacy practices at policies.google.com.

c. Cookies: we use only essential cookies necessary for the Site to function and for Google Analytics measurement. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. You can control cookies through your browser settings.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your personal information only to:

  • Send you the Crohn Zone Weekly Digest after you confirm your email via our double opt-in flow.
  • Respond to messages you send us via the contact form.
  • Maintain a record of your consent (timestamp, IP address, and the exact consent text shown to you) as legal proof of opt-in.
  • Maintain the security and operation of the Site.
  • Comply with our legal obligations, including responding to lawful requests from public authorities.

4. How We Share Your Information

We share your personal information only with service providers who help us run the Site and deliver the newsletter, under written agreements that limit their use to providing the service:

  • MailerLite (email service provider) - stores your email subscription and delivers the digest.
  • Resend (transactional email) - delivers our contact form submissions to our inbox.
  • Vercel (hosting) - serves the Site and processes form submissions.
  • Google Analytics (analytics) - aggregate usage measurement.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.

5. Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Right to Know: request that we disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, the business purposes for collecting it, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it.
  • Right to Delete: request that we delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions (e.g., legal compliance).
  • Right to Correct: request that we correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing: we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. This right does not currently apply to us.
  • Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information: we do not collect or process sensitive personal information.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination: we will not deny you services, charge you a different price, or provide a different level of quality because you exercised your privacy rights.

How to exercise your rights: email us at contact@crohnzone.com with the subject line "CCPA Request" and tell us which right you want to exercise. We will verify your identity by confirming you control the email address associated with the request, and we will respond within 45 days (extendable by 45 more days where reasonably necessary, with notice to you). You may also authorize an agent to act on your behalf in accordance with CCPA requirements.

6. CAN-SPAM Compliance

Every commercial email we send complies with the federal CAN-SPAM Act of 2003:

  • The "From," "To," and routing information identify the sender.
  • Subject lines accurately reflect the content of the message.
  • Each email contains a clear and conspicuous unsubscribe mechanism.
  • Each email contains our valid physical postal address in its footer.
  • We honor unsubscribe requests within 10 business days. In practice we honor them within minutes through automatic processing.

7. Newsletter Consent and Double Opt-In

When you submit the newsletter signup form, we record your email, the exact consent text you agreed to, the timestamp, and your IP address as legal proof of consent. You will then receive a confirmation email containing a link. You only become an active subscriber after you click that link (double opt-in). You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any digest email or by emailing us at contact@crohnzone.com.

8. EU / UK Visitors (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the GDPR that overlap substantially with the CCPA rights above (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection). Our legal basis for processing your newsletter subscription is your explicit consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you provide via the consent checkbox at signup and again via the confirmation link. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing. Our legal basis for processing contact form submissions is performance of pre-contractual steps at your request (Article 6(1)(b)). Use the same email address above to exercise your rights.

9. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, restricted access to subscriber data, and established service providers. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

The Site is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us so we can delete it.

11. Third-Party Links

The Site may link to third-party websites, products, or services. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing them with personal information.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes that affect how we use your personal information, we will notify subscribers via email. Your continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
